Onenightwhenseekinghisestrangedwife,Hoffmanngoestotheyouthcenterwheresheworks.Thepolicearethereroundingupradicalswhofrequentthecenter-Hoffmannrunsintothebuildingandendsupbeingshotinthehead.Heawakenswithbraintrauma,partiallyparalyzedandunabletospeak.Thepoliceaccusehimofstabbinganofficer;theradicalsheraldhimasaninnocentvictimofpolicebrutality.Duringhisslowrecoveryatthehospital,Hoffmannmustpiecetogetherhislifeandstruggletoremembertheeventsofthatnight.
